It has all the ingredients of the typical gangster movies, the radical director is known for. Catchy lines which can be best described, for lack of a better word, as being cool. Heard from the mouths of even cooler characters played by accomplished actors makes the movie experience all the more memorable and entertaining. The movie has been made in an asynchronous style and designed, as the title suggests as consisting of a few short stories fashioned into a magazine. The plots of these stories are captivating, always with an anti-societal element and an in-your-face story line. Tarantino seems to address himself towards the darker side of all human beings, the rebellious side, the id, with masterful elegance and sheer story telling power.

The movie is best viewed while dining on some burgers, the best kind being the big kahuna burger, unless of course, your girlfriend is vegetarian.

Parzania (2006)

9 Naga (2006)

9 Dragons directed by Rudi Soedjarwo is the story of three gangsters - Marwan (Lukman Sardi), Lenny (Fauzi Baadila) and Donny (Doni Alamsyah) based in the ghettos of Jakarta. Each one has challenges in his own personal lives. Marwan lives with his handicapped wife and child, however runs from his family responsibilities. Donny wants to help his brother who has a keen interest in drawing and wants to pursue it as a career but is put off by high admission fees of the college. Lenny has developed a crush on a girl who serves in a bar but cannot express as she does not speak Bhasha and her uncle thinks he is a crook. Amongst all this fight for survival, there is a desire in them to move away from the maim. They believe "one kill is too many" but overcoming the challenges means getting out of the rut they are in. And to get out, they need a leap which can only be achieved by more maim. Marwan accidentally kills Donny in one such errands and is filled with regret for his actions and tries to change himself totally. BUT he ends up in a soup as he kills the person who used to hire him as an assassin. He buys the dream house of his wife from the stolen money from his hirer; gets his child immunised and gets ready to surrender to the police. But, the bad guys are now on a lookout for him for killing his hirer and the stolen dough. They hold Lenny captive and ask Marwan to come take him in return for the money. In the end Marwan meets the same fate as his preys used to.

Interesting fact from IMDB:
Actor Fauzi Baadila's belly button and the film's tagline "Manusia terbaik di Indonesia adalah seorang penjahat" (The best man in Indonesia is a criminal) on posters had to be covered with red tape a month before the film's release when the country's film censor board complained. The covers of the 9 Naga DVD and VCD do not contain the tagline but do, however, have a large red "X" posted over Baadilla's body part.

Director's successful attempts:
The background music and its editing was quite amazing and very timely placed in the scenes. Good storyline.

Director's failed attempts:
There was a strong attempt to make this a cognitively heavy movie but the transistion from gangster movie to emotional was not quite successful. Not once did I feel moved by any of the scenes. And this is partly due to the character's performances - I mean watching Marwan trudging slowly in guilt; hugging Lenny; putting on the white sweater woven by his wife looked far too melodramatic and sometimes funny. Another thing is the pace of the movie... it just makes you impossible to keep awake.

Roman Holiday (1953)

Passion of Anna (1969)

Directed by Ingmar Bergman, this movie is filmed in the aftermath of Ingmar Bergman's break-up with Liv Ullmann (Anna) on the island where they had lived together. Bergman delves deeply into human pychee and compels the audience to analyse human behaviour in strange situations. This one is truly fabulous. It's based on four characters - Andreas, Anna, Eva and Elis. Andreas is in mental agony over his unhappy marriage and his wife leaving him. He is lonely and gets close with Anna and Elis and his wife Eva. Based on a Swedish family - Ekdahl's story, this movie takes you through how the family passes through happy and sad times. Oscar passes away and his gorgeous wife marries the local priest and moves into his house with Fanny and Alexander. Immediately, their life becomes miserable. A lot to be learnt from this movie about human pyschee. This is a marvelously made movie with excellent direction and performances. It's a bit lengthy though but worth every minute.

Pixote (1981)

Very typical of the Brazilian movies I have seen. The other one was "City of Gods". Both these revolve around the same theme - Violence, drugs, prostitution and all illegal stuff - if that is not enough it seems all this is handled by very young people. Pixote in this movie is aged 10. Probably, these people don't live longer than their teens, that's why there are so few (read hardly any) grown ups indulging in these activities. Anyways that's besides the point. The point is this is an amazing movie. I give more than due credit to directors who make the kids act and this is not singing a school poem, its more than that. Kids acting in this movie are all street kids and not pro artists and I think they have done a wonderful job. Add to this the picturisation and the story line this movie is a definite must watch. This one is directed by Hector Babenco. The subtitles took the fun of the movie away, how I wished this was dubbed in English.

Makes me think what's the life of a chotu serving you chai or paranthas at the nearest dhaba. OK, I am not impressed with the camera work or the light work. Gave me a terrible headache. But then I put on my cinephile glasses and I see couple of good points about the movie. Typical cult movie with unique story which is quite interesting. The performances are good too specifically by Birgitte Helm.

You got to give it to this movie. The movie was a great success when released and bagged 7 Oscars including best picture and best direction. The famous whistling tune is widely associated with the movie. The movie is shot in black and white. Generally serious, I almost fell asleep in parts. The movie is okayish however Orson Welles has done his part of direction and performance really well. The first scene of the movie is really awesome - how a car carrying a bomb on board moves on slowly going past and front of this couple. Some interesting facts from IMDB:

Orson Welles was originally hired only to act in the film, but due to a misunderstanding, Charlton Heston understood that Welles was to be the director. To keep Heston happy, the producer allowed Welles to direct.

Orson Welles was fired as director during post-production, and the film was recut contrary to his wishes. Before his death, he left instructions on how he wanted the film to be edited, and in 1998 a version was made the way he intended.

Stage Fright (1950)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, he also features in the movie as Eve was walking down the road. The plot is not vibrant as we think we know who has done the murder. The end is interesting. The performance by Eve's mom and dad are good and hilarious however Johnny has not acted very well. Eve looks like a simple and harmless dove. The vampire has acted too well which is evident from how she changes from beginning shot when she is begging Johnny and to the rest of the movie. Nerves of steel.
The end is amazing. The setting in which Eve knows that Johnny has killed before was nothing less of spectacular. Good work by camera too. The film tells the true story of what happened to Manny and his family.

Foreign Correspondent (1940)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the movie tried to capture several sets which were ahead of time then and its quite obvious during the movie that its been a rather unsuccessful attempt at that. Nonetheless, a good try. The story is intriguing. Johnny (Joel McCrea) who is a reporter on a New York newspaper is sent to Europe as a foreign correspondent. Johnny's assigned to get the inside story on a secret treaty agreed between two European countries by diplomat Van Meer. As he works towards his task, all kind of complications arise and he becomes determined to solve the mystery ahead.

Though the performances are crisp, the movie is a bit dull. This is an old german classic directed by Fritz Lang. A psychotic child murderer stalks a german city, and despite an exhaustive investigation the police have been unable to find him. But the police crackdown does have one side-affect, it makes it nearly impossible for the organised underground criminals to operate. So they decide that the only way to get the police off their backs is to catch the murderer themselves. This movie is from times when the sound movies had just started to come out. Peter Lorre's performance was quite captivating.

I could not get one of the best subtitles and had to struggle a bit with reading them.

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick is great. Every character in this movie has acted so well kudos to Kubrick. He is the guy who knows how to utilise the full potential of actors. Who else can make a kid act so amanzingly..no one but Kubrick. The tension...the telepathic power of the boy...camera angle when Jack Nicholson is locked in the supplies room...the naturalistic action...its all truly awesome. The movie is loosely based on Stephen King's novel The Shining. Some very interesting facts that I read on IMDB about the movie are:

The book that Jack was writing contained the one sentence ("All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy") repeated over and over. Kubrick had each page individually typed. For the Italian version of the film, Kubrick used the phrase "Il mattino ha l' oro in bocca" ("He who wakes up early meets a golden day"). For the German version, it was "Was Du heute kannst besorgen, das verschiebe nicht auf Morgen" ("Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today"). For the Spanish version, it was "No por mucho madrugar amanece más temprano" ("Although one will rise early, it won't dawn sooner."). For the French version, it was "Un 'Tiens' vaut mieux que deux 'Tu l'auras'" ("A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush").

Kubrick demanded 127 takes from Shelly Duvall in one scene.

Kubrick ordered more than 120 takes in the scene where the camera simply slowly zooms in on Scatman Crothers as he "shines" in his bedroom. Kubrick originally wanted approximately 70 takes of the scene where Halloran gets killed by Jack Torrance, but Jack Nicholson talked Kubrick into going easy on the 70 year-old Crothers and stopping after 40.

Kubrick, known for his compulsiveness and numerous retakes, got the difficult shot of blood pouring from the elevators in only three takes. This would be remarkable if it weren't for the fact that the shot took nine days to set up; every time the doors opened and the blood poured out, Kubrick would say, "It doesn't look like blood." They had tried shooting that scene for an entire year.

At the time of release, it was the policy of the MPAA to not allow the portrayal of blood in trailers that would be approved for all audiences. In order to overcome this, Kubrick convinced the board that was approving the trailer that the blood flooding out of the elevator was actually rusty water.

Kubrick composed and shot this film in the negative ratio (1.37:1) format so that in TV we see it in 1.33:1, but in the cinemas wee see it in 1.85:1 (aspect ratio). When a film is shot in 1.37:1, the top and the bottom of the frame are intended to be masked off in the cinemas to create a widescreen version, but are not masked off in the TV - VHS - DVD version.

Danny croaks "Redrum" 43 times before his mother wakes up and Jack starts to break into the apartment.

Must watch. Christian Bale who features as the protagonist looks straight out of a german concentration camp. Apparently, this guy dropped from about 180 pounds in weight down to about 120 pounds in weight to make this film. His diet consisted of one can of tuna and an apple per day. His 63-pound weight loss is said to be a record for any actor for a movie role. He since gained the weight back for his role in Batman Begins (2005).

The film grips you with time and becomes more interesting as the plot is revealed. Good direction by Brad Anderson and commendable acting by Bale. The weight of a stack of nickels. The weight of a chocolate bar. The weight of a hummingbird..."
21 grams is a gripping flick from Alejandro González Iñárritu (director of Amores Perros). Three parallel stories beautifully intertwined in chronological dysjunction which get connected by an accident. Paul (Sean Penn) patient of a heart disease ; Christina, a woman who has lost her husband and children in an accident; and Jack (Del Toro), an ex-convict who has found in his Christian faith the strength to raise a family.

Hard facts from IMDB:

The film was shot almost completely with hand-held cameras.

The film was shot in chronological order (even though it's not in chronological order in its final cut).

The title comes from the work of Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts in the early twentieth century. MacDougall weighed dying subjects, in experiments of extremely dubious scientific value, believing that he was proving that the soul was material and measurable. His results in fact varied wildly, but 21 grams has come to be believed as the accepted measure of a soul's weight.

Overall, a great watch.
